Simon Ludwig Ditlev Simonsen |
(Danish, 1841 -1928 ) |
Simon Simonsen was a noted nineteenth century Danish artist. Although he completed
many portraits of people, he is mostly known as primarily a painter of animals,
and in particular, dogs and horses.
Born in Munich on January 19, 1841, he was a student of his father the painter
Niels S. Simonsen, as well as studying at the Academy in Copenhagen. He later
studied at Chevreuse with the well-known French artist, August Bonheur.
Simonsen is well represented in Danish museums, although his work is quite rare
in North America. The artist died in Copenhagen on February 27, 1928. |
